Paul Pogba blasted by former Manchester United midfielder
When Paul Pogba signed for Manchester United in 2016, it was seen as a coup. A UEFA Europa League outfit signing a player who was competing in the UEFA Champions League with Juventus? Surely not. United had recently appointed coach Jose Mourinho, and he set about bringing in big name characters who could take United back to the top. Four years on, though, it seems more likely that Pogba will move on in a cut-price summer 2021 move.
Frustrating fans and ex-players alike, his total lack of any consistency has driven United to distraction. So much so that former United (and Liverpool) player Paul Ince did not hold back when speaking about Pogba. Following a 2-1 reverse in Istanbul against Istanbul Basaksehir, United are looking at a shocking run of form. A 4-1 win over Newcastle United and a 0-0 with Chelsea had bookmarked a 5-0 thrashing of RB Leipzig. Now, though, a poor return of form is back with United looking out of ideas and inspiration once again.
While the coach, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has come under significant fire, it has been star players who have been targeted by the press. Ince was scathing about Pogba, telling him to “forget” about his potential move to Spain with Real Madrid and start playing better for United.
‘Nothing but problems’
A combative and aggressive character himself, it would be fair to say that Ince knows about self-belief and swagger. He was a midfield anchor for United and, for a time, justified the faith put in him by Alex Ferguson. Despite eventually moving on to Internazionale and then long-term rivals to United, Liverpool, scoring a winner against United whilst playing at Anfield, Ince clearly has strong ties to his old club.
In a bombastic interview with Ladbrokes, Ince did not hold back when talking about Pogba, saying: “I love Pogba. I think he’s a world-class player on his day. We saw that at Juventus. But since he’s come to Manchester United it’s been nothing but problems.
“Under Jose Mourinho and things with his agent, there’s always something. His performances haven’t been up to scratch, the fans have almost gone against him.
“If I was playing with him, I’d be saying ‘listen, you just go out there and play. Go out there and start performing. Once you start performing like you should be performing, then you can talk about wanting to sign for Real Madrid, because at the moment you can’t even get into the Man United side.’
The former England man summed up his view of the Frenchman, saying “Man United is not about Paul Pogba.”
It was a scathing review from a player who has in his own career left United only to find out the grass is not always greener on the other side. With Pogba entering into the final year of his contract this summer, the time is now: either start playing, or focus on finding a new employer for the benefit of all parties involved.
When Pogba signed in 2016, he was supposed to be a gamechanger. Instead, he has become a poster boy for the inconsistency that has plagued United in the post-Ferguson era.
